#95  Double Half-Batch European Amber Lager
3.3 lbs (1 can) Briess Munich LME
1 lb Briess Pilsen Light DME
1oz Hallertauer pellet hops (4%AA) (45 min)
1oz Hallertauer pellet hops (4%AA) (flameout)
Starter WLP-838 Southern German Lager Yeast
- Brewed 3 April 2010.  Extract OG: 1.053.  AG OG: 1.056
(74% efficiency).  The intent was to do "identical" batches,
one extract & one AG, to compare & contrast.  Once
fermentation was well underway at room temp, I began
slowly bringing the temp down to 50F.  At start: Extract is
strikingly darker than AG, about 10-15L.
- Racked 17 April 2010.  AG is still lighter, has ~2x the
sediment.  Malty.  Extract is dryer, hoppier, has a taste that
must be the dreaded Extract "twang."  Diacetyl rest started.
- 20 April: cold crash to 32F.
- 10 June: Bottled.  AG is still far and away the better of the
two.
